Spirituality in High Spirits According to royal documents, grand ceremonies to propitiate High Spirits were held occasionally in ancient times. In such ceremonies, the spirit media concerned had to participate in them wearing their costumes systematically. Both Myanmar orchestra players and the spirit media had to accomplish their respective duties very seriously and attentively as those grand ceremonies were held under royal orders. The spirit media were to be possessed by the High Spirits which used to be power-holders, heroes and others related to them when they were alive. The spirit media under the possession of the High Spirits, which used to be kings before they died, were not allowed to put on the costumes of a king. Instead they had to wear loose long sleeve robes with triangular or rectangular button holes, turbans or distinctive fillet worn by royalty when they performed.
