***Spoilers spoiler spoilers.** Do not read ahead if you dont want to contend with learning about the HIMYM finale. Seriously, its going to be a spoiler. The last chance to turn back if you dont want a spoiler. Okay, now that all those people who dont want the spoiler have left, lets get down to it. There are a lot of people feeling like the final episode of How I Met Your Mother really felt all wrong... That the rapid fire scenes counteracting a painstakingly drawn out wedding between a couple you felt would make it. Instead one that shatters at the speed bump of a husband unable to deal with a successful wife with a busy traveling schedule. The odd realization of the Mother you have been waiting for seemingly snuffed out in a cut scene. Characters acting just not how it should have been... If you felt that way, then you are not alone. I myself didnt really feel like this episode ended in how Id have preferred. Ive joked since the first season that the only way you could get 2 teens to listen to a story like that is if it was after the moms funeral. But, as the show progresses I said this more in a laughing manner, as I grew to hope that this prediction wouldnt come true. But I kept going back to my thoughts, How any kids would listen to all this, all the stories of their fathers conquests, all in one telling... Only way was if they knew the father was having some torn emotions. And thats why the kids dutifully sat and listened. Sat there... For 9 years... Not aging. Ever wonder about that? They had these two ageless actors to book end the show, or to react to a statement. they had the slow nod, the shocked face, but what they also had was them responding to their father at the end of the tellings. Explaining what he should do after hearing all these tales. About how hes suppose to be with Robin. Same face, same clothes, 9 years.. And here is the central point of my argument. Those kid actors did all their filming 9 years ago. (Example: The son is nearly 25 now). The last episode was literally filmed the first season, when the writers and audience was all about the Blue French horn. That was where he was suppose to be, with the crazy Canadian girl of his dreams. But, what they didnt expect was the growth and flow of the show. How the mother would gain her own character, sheerly out of the enigmatic puzzle pieces the audience had pieced together. The human condition always assumes and builds a character, give us enough info, and we will construct the best example of what people should be. And that is what weve done for all these years, as weve grown to love the characters, we have constructed the perfect person in our imagination for Ted. A mate the blends all his quirks and makes you realize that hope is there. For nearly a decade youve constructed a life of a person. Its a sign of good writing, great acting, and just plenty of time. The characters evolved, they left the first season and went on. By the last season we see a cast that followed a path that flowed organically. And that is why the ending upsets. Is that they then had to cap the show off with what they felt was the direction from 9 years back. A world where they end on a blue French horn being held in the air. They needed to utilize the words uttered by the ageless son and daughter of a mother that really was as good as we had hoped for. They writers decided that they had to use the filmed scenes, that took precedent when writing the ending. So it seems the mother was already dead before she ever showed up, practically before the show ever aired. They wrote the ending at the same time they wrote the pilot, which is truly sad to all those people like myself, that fell in love with the journey.
