Spokeswoman Antoinette Shallue said it did not condone the practice but owner-operators could set their own employment terms. The Whakatane workers contracts allowed for a financial consequence for failing to follow certain prescribed procedures, she said. This consequence was enforced. This IS the consequence of Nationals continued attacks on workers rights. It tells bad employers like this one they can go all out on their most vulnerable employees. There is a clear message out of this and the petrol station story - JOIN A UNION!! You never know when youll need them. The employers all join their unions (EMA, Business NZ), why shouldnt workers?
