Spooky Sort-Of Covers #31: The Knickerbockers - Lies This would have made a fantastic Beatles track, perfect for John Lennon to roar out the bitter words. But it had nothing to do with them. These American boys specialised in absorbing and replicating other bands styles, and just happened to come up with something brilliant on this occasion. I love the guy with the sax, miming along when theres actually no sax audible on the record. He looks like that guy out of a thousand US comedies who was a big noise in high school and has been disappointed ever since, and still bullies the same kind of guys he bullied back then, when he was the star quarterback, to make up for it. He was having a second slice of fame here in 1965: he was previously in The Royal Teens, who made one of Homer Simpsons favourite records, Short Shorts, in 1958. Also - as always with these 60s US tv clips - check the dancing! Its worth watching for that alone. Theres some fruggin crazy mashed potatoing going on here.
