DECLARING A MAJOR: DUFNER SCHOOLS FIELD TO CLAIM FIRST MAJOR Two years ago, Jason Dufner turned out to be a major disappointment, blowing a four-shot lead with four holes to play at the PGA Championship in Atlanta. But on Sunday in Pittsford, NY, he claimed his first major title after finishing with a 2-under 68 to win the PGA Championship by two strokes over Jim Furyk. Sweden’s Henrik Stenson shot a 70 and finished third, fellow Swede Jonas Blixt also shot a 70 and finished fourth, and Masters champion Adam Scott finished tied for fifth. Tiger Woods tied for 40th, finishing 14 shots back. FLASHBACK TO PAYBACK: BUSCH WINS AT WATKINS GLEN Hoping not to repeat the bitter defeat he suffered last year at Watkins Glen International at the hands of Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch made a mad dash to the finishing line with just two laps to go and this time held off Keselowski to claim the checkered flag on Sunday. Last year, Keselowski bumped Busch on the final lap to win, but yesterday he had to settle for a third straight second-place finish. Martin Truex Jr. came in third, Carl Edwards fourth and Juan Pablo Montoya fifth. PRO PIGSKIN PRESEASON PERUSAL: A GLANCE AT WEEKEND’S GAMES The NFL preseason kicked into high gear over the weekend with a glut of games on the schedule Friday through Sunday. Here is a quick recap of the finals: On Sunday, the Bills crushed the Colts 44-20, on Saturday, the Giants stymied the Steelers 18-13, and on Friday the Raiders lassoed the Cowboys 19-17, the Panthers prevailed over the Bears 24-17, the Saints stopped the Chiefs 17-13, the Texans trampled the Vikings 27-13, the Cardinals pounded the Packers 17-0, the Dolphins destroyed the Jaguars 27-3, the Patriots put it to the Eagles 31-22, and the Lions grounded the Jets 26-17. HELPING HANDS: RAVENS SIGN VETERAN TIGHT END CLARK Hurting for a tight end with sure hands, the Baltimore Ravens signed 34-year old Dallas Clark Sunday in the hopes that he’ll help out with starter Dennis Pita out for the rest of the year with a hip injury. In his 10 seasons in the league (the first nine with the Colts), Clark has caught 474 passes for 5,322 yards and 50 touchdowns. He grabbed 47 balls for 435 yards and four scores with the Buccaneers last season. FULL COURT PRESS: JAMES PRESSING FOR NBPA PRESIDENCY On Saturday, LeBron James continued his campaign to become the next National Basketball Players Association president, saying in an interview that the NBPA is a mess. He told ESPN, “I just think the union is going backwards, and it’s not in a good place right now. I think my voice could be huge in that situation.” But despite acting and sounding like a candidate, James sounded like a typical politician leaving himself some wiggle room when he added, “I’m not sure I have the time to do it, but…if it’s not me in that seat then I hope it’s someone who is comfortable with it and can do the job.”
