SportsCity Round-up ---with LEKAN ADEDEJI---- Nigeria Storms Womens World Boxing Nigeria female boxers are now in South Korea for the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship that begins on Sunday at Jeju of the Asian country. The team took off on Thursday for the most anticipated battles which will come to an end on November 25. The coach that led the team to the last major competition of the year, Olalehin Adura has promised that his athletes are in Korea to shake the world of boxing not for participation only because they have got what it takes to excel in the 10 day boxing competition. Nigeria team is to compete with the majority of the best boxers in the world apart from the England’s London 2012 Olympic Champion and EUBC European Continental Champion Nicola Adams, and Indias five-time AIBA Womens World Champion and Asian Games winner Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte who will miss the competition due to injuries. Therefore the team will contend with Russias rising Sayana Sagatayeva, Bulgarias EUBC European Continental Champion Stoyka Petrova, and London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Marlen Esparza. Olalehin said the Nigeria female boxers are very in high spirits to be in Korea to make the country proud as the nine boxers were selected from among the best that the country can produce and added that the names of their counterparts in from other countries will not move his athletes. “The boxers are to come back to the country with medals because everything needed to be champions are provided for them so I am sure, they will make Nigeria proud,” Olalehin said Governor’s Cup Tennis Stars Monday The 2014 edition of Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Champion has been confirmed to be held between November 17 and 22, according to the information from Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF). The tournament which was postpone because of the outbreak of the deadly disease, Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is now going to take place to accommodate only African stars. According to the secretary of the federation, Mrs. Gloria Ukwemkpu, the tournament will hold base on invitation, the ATP point will be present in this year edition but the players will have their prize money. It is also said that the federation is working on the sponsorship to make the edition be better than the previous ones as there will be better packages for the players. There will be 12 Nigerian best players and players from other African countries, there are accommodations for the players no matter where they come from. As usual Nigerian players will emerge from training to competition, while their counterparts abroad will pass through competitions into major competition. “Only players within the continent will be invited to attend this year’s tournament. Plans are in top gear to make the official announcement that we’ll stage the tournament,” Mrs. Ukwemkpu said. “We are always happy to work with the sponsors to move our tennis forward and I can assure you that there are better packages for our players in the coming months.” Rugby Standard Excites Federation Technical Director of Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, Tunji Fasimoye has said the body is very happy with the standard of the sport in the country. The director said the success of the Independence Rugby 7’s tournament was a testimony to the improvement of the sport as it progress every year. The competition which was held from at Onikan Stadium, was won by Cowrie Rugby club, Barewa was runner-up, while Police Rugby Club came third. The Competition was held at that time to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence. Therefore, the federation appreciates their sponsors for their support which is responsible for the success of the federation and the growth of the sport in the country. The NRFF chief said that the tournament would be used to select players who would represent the country at the Africa Cup 7’s Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe. Famoye said, “I am pleased with the standard of play and the extent rugby has attained in the country and I must also commend the turnout of spectators and their support. “This is evidence that rugby has huge following in the country. “We also appreciate our sponsor, CMB Building Maintenance and Investment Company Limited that have been supporting the federation for the past 10 years, they contribute immensely to the progress of the sport,” Famoye said.
