Squats and deadlifts are known as the powerlifts and - TopicsExpress

Squats and deadlifts are known as the powerlifts and Olympic/weightlifting are known as the clean and jerks and snatches. This is inaccurate and drives me nuts in the weightlifting world. This is power! Power is expressed as force and the distance traveled relative to the time it took to move a load... your own or an external loads. Powerlifts such as squats and deadlifts dont require time as such a primary constituent in comparison to the Olympic lifts (those are force lifts)... you MUST be fast getting under a snatch and clean and jerk.... just watch the video. Power is, in my opinion, the combination of speed (so being quick) but being strong as well. Things that are super fast are usually not that strong and things that are strong are typically not super fast. This is until something expressed and consists of both of these and then it becomes POWER! You look at an effective sprinter or Olympic lifter or gymnasts and you gotta tell yourself Wow! That dude is powerful! FYI... grunting also helps cultivate power. Just saying ;)
