Dominika Ralcewicz 14, a native of Poland who has lived in the United States less than a year, brought a unique perspective to the annual essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW, with the theme this year of “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.” “Some people I’ve met here don’t know how lucky they are to have been born in America and seem to take its freedoms for granted since it’s been a part of their lives for so long,” said Ralcewicz, a student at Father Ryan High School. “I especially appreciate the educational opportunities this country has given me.
