Srinagar, June 22: (GNS) A fierce gunfight raged between mujahidis and joint team of forces at Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday evening. A senior police official told GNS that acting on a specific information about the presence of 2-3 militants at Krankshuven Colony in Sopore, the joint team of army’s 52 RR, 22 RR, CRPF and SOG cordoned off the whole area at around 5:15 p.m today. Initially the joint team of forces evacuated the people towards safer places, the official said, adding that the announcements were also made via public address system, asking people not to venture inside the cordoned area. Later in the evening at around 8:10 pm, the joint team of forces intensified the searches, the hiding militants tried to break the cordon and fired indiscriminately, the official said, adding that the fire was retaliated ensuing a fierce encounter which is still going on. Meanwhile, sources told GNS that Mehmood Bai of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit is believed to be trapped in the area. (GNS)
