Srinagar: The state Congress Sunday pledged its support to the National Conference (NC) candidates during the forthcoming polls in valley. State Congress chief Prof Safi-ud-din Soz presided over and important meeting of Congress workers at Srinagar and asked the cadres to gear up to support NC candidates in Lok Sabha elections. The meeting discussed threadbare the situation that has emerged after NC entered into pre-poll alliance with the Congress for the parliamentary polls scheduled to be held from April 10. Several activists within the Congress expressed strong resentment over the statements of several NC leaders in the recent past, sources said. “We the Congress activists have never been approached by the NC candidates- why should we go for any alliance,” asked one of the Congress workers present in the meeting. Others present in the meet echoed the comments stating that Congress has a strong footing in valley and should have contested solely. They were later pacified by the senior Congress leaders, asserting them that NC’s win in valley will be UPA’s win at New Delhi.
