St. Mary’s Convoy Reserves v MacCumhaills – Junior B Championship – 2nd Leg Having beaten MacCumhaills at home last weekend in the 1st Leg of the Junior B Championship, the Convoy lads made the short journey to Ballybofey for the away leg. The boys knew that they would need another fine team performance in order to evade that dreaded third game. The game opened lively with MacCumhaills missing a fine goal chance opportunity in the first few minutes of the game. Paul O’Leary opened the scoring for Convoy in the 5th minute, and this was followed by points from Sean Sweeney and Oliver Quinn. O’Leary then pointed again from free, to make the score-line 0-4 to 0-00 in Convoy’s favour. MacCumhaills had to wait until the 13th minute, to get points on the score board, when they scored two quick successive points. The 16th minute saw two points from Sean Sweeney, one at the end of a solo run from just inside the MacCumhaill half and the other from a rebound, following a save by the MacCumhaill’s keeper on Shane McLaughlin’s goal bound strike. Oliver Quinn then pointed to take the scoreline to 0-7 to 0-2. Convoy’s only goal of the game came in the 19th minute, when Michael Ayton collected the ball, and with players screaming for the ball around him, Michael only had one thing in his sight and he slammed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-7 to 0-2. The MacCumhaills defence seemed to be struggling to keep up with the speed and agility of the Convoy forwards and were unable to stop further points from Michael Ayton, Paul O’Leary and Gavin Sweeny. Gavin McBrearty, playing in the corner back position, made a superb support run down the field, in the 26th minute, which ended in Paul O’Leary pointing again for Convoy. MacCumhaills then scored a further two points, leaving the scoreline at 1-11 to 0-4 at half-time. The second half started with Paul O’Leary pointing for Convoy but MacCumhaill’s answered straight away getting another point on the board (1-12 to 0-5). MacCumhaills then almost found the net, but Convoy’s Emmett Doherty was on hand to pull off a fine save. Sean Sweeney then pointed from a tight angle, following an excellent pass by Shane McLaughlin. Frustration began to show in the MacCumhaill defence, which saw Michael Ayton being brought to the ground and a yellow card being shown. Sean Sweeney stepped up to the mark and pointed from the free (1-14 to 0-5). The Convoy defence, which was superbly marshalled by Eunan Kelly, had a fantastic all round performance, and held MacCumhaill’s out for their 6th point of the game until the 44th minute of the game. Fine fielding in mid-field by Ronan Steede, in the 46th minute, was capitalised on by fellow mid-fielder Michael Ayton, who slipped the ball to Paul O’Leary who, unselfishly, laid the ball off to Gavin Sweeney to put the ball over the bar (1-15 to 0-6). Gavin Sweeney then points again from a free. In the 53rd minute, Michael Patton was fouled off the ball, but as the referee didn’t see the incident, play was allowed to carry on, which seen Convoy’s concentration lapse for a few seconds and MacCumhaill’s found the net. The linesman brought the foul to the attention of the referee and a black card was handed out. Gavin Sweeney got Convoy’s last point of the game in the 69th minute, while the 70th minute saw a MacCumhaill’s player get a straight red card. MacCumhaill’s finish the game with a point just before the final whistle. This was a fine team performance for all of the Convoy lads – well done lads.
