St. Scholastica Academy recently observed the Feast Day of its patroness, Saint Scholastica, with a Mass celebrated by Father Charles Benoit, O.S.B. Before Mass, an oral and visual history of St. Scholastica was read to those in attendance. The SSA choir and students sang numerous psalms and songs throughout Mass. The Class of 1964 (50 years) and the Class of 1989 (25 years) were invited back to campus to be honored, and the eighth graders were pinned by their “SSA big sisters” in honor of their induction to St. Scholastica Academy. Following the Mass, the eighth graders (Class of 2018) were inducted into the Academy. During the induction, seniors Amanda Boe, Carley Boyce, Abigail Childress, Colette Crouere and Alyssa Hebert read reflections on their years at SSA, hoping to bestow some wisdom on the eighth graders. The seniors then pinned their “SSA Little Sister” and presented them with a flower as they processed out of the ceremony. A luncheon held in the cafeteria was organized by the SSA Parent Club. The theme was “Honoring the Doves of SSA”. The decorating committee transformed the cafeteria with blue, white and silver, doves and balloons for the celebration. There were pictures of students spending time together on the bulletin boards, showing the bond the girls have with one another at SSA. The cafeteria staff prepared a delicious meal. The moms served lunch to the honored alumnae and then to all the students, teachers and staff. The chairs of the luncheon were Stephanie Ruli and Jeanelle Scheurich. St. Scholastica lived in the fifth century and, with her twin brother St. Benedict, founded two religious orders for men and women. The school has a special saying about their patron which is, “St. Scholastica could do more, because she loved more.” SSA was established in Covington by the Benedictine Sisters in 1903 and has been in its same location for 110 years.
