Stafford return to league action on Wednesday when they travel to Lichfield City 6:30 kick off at Beacon Park Lichfield Stafford Rangers U18s-CMSYL Sunday 6th April 2014 Keele Fc 2 - 2 Stafford Rangers With the league won and two cup finals secured Rangers came up against Keele FC for the fourth time this year. Keele themselves have reached their own cup final and the neutral may well have thought that both teams may play out a quiet end of season affair. Both sides had competed in the Sentinel Cup semi final just five days earlier with Rangers coming through thanks to a solitary goal from Mat Smith. The game was anything but quiet though and ebbed and flowed throughout. Rangers started brightly and scored in the first minute following a first gift of the afternoon as Keele keeper Wood kicked the ball into one of his own defenders presenting Mat Smith with a chance which he duly despatched from the edge of the box. Rangers were then wasteful from a couple of good opportunities which fell to Harry Wightman from a Tom Vaughan corner as his free header was straight at the keeper. Smith repeated the feat and Alex Hannan burst through to bring a good save from Wood again low to his left. After twenty minutes though Keele came into the game and Sami Meir broke through on goal but was brought down by a combination of Sam Marsden and Harry Wightman. The resultant free kick was taken twice before Sam Golden lifted it just over Rangers keeper Wes Hopwoods cross bar. Then it was Rangers turn to present a gift as Sam Marsden and Dan Nowell lost possession on the edge of their area which was punished by Golden who received a neat pass from Meir for the equaliser completely unmarked six yards out. Generosity continued and from Keeles next attack a resultant corner was glanced in by an unmarked Keele player. In the second half Marcus Matthews equalised from Sean Phillips free kick arriving on the back post completely unmarked and then Rangers proceeded to waste chance after chance as they went in search of the winner. Good crosses from the right saw the ball pulled back along the floor for unattended Rangers players to sky the ball or shoot tamely at keeper Wood. Keele worked all the way to the end and Wes Hopwood was forced to make a save with his feet and take several crosses as Keele countered. In the end both teams settled for a point and for both teams they now take a well earned rest ahead of next weekends fixtures.
