Star Tribune op-ed this morning. For me it comes down to this - I love the work of being mayor. I love to problem solve, struggle with big challenges, and strive to deliver the best possible service at the lowest possible cost to our residents. I love this city and having the chance to proudly promote the good things happening in Duluth. Politics has been a means to an end - a chance to serve my community. In the past I have been willing to tolerate selfish and mean-spirited politics, but my patience has worn thin. Its hard to describe this accurately... Im not leaving office because ugly politics exist - but rather because I dont want my lack of patience or my desire to shield my kids from it to limit my effectiveness as mayor. Ive decided its best to leave before it impacts how I approach the job. My approach over the years has been to simply absorb the political blows as they come, to try to stay above the fray, and to resist the temptation to engage in the negativity. It hasnt been often, but I almost always regret when I feel a need to respond to negativity. But believe me, its tough to absorb it all. Im proud of this approach, but it takes a toll.
