********** Star of the month of August ***************** Barley presented to the practice in the middle of the night, having woken her owners whining to get out. They immediately noticed that her abdomen was bloated and when they let her out she was wretching but not producing anything. They knew right away that this was an emergency and so contacted the on-call vet. Barley was brought straight in and on arrival she was X-rayed and intravenous fluids were started. Xrays confirmed that she had a large, gas-filled stomach (gastric dilation). At this point the vet tried to pass a stomach tube but it would not go into the stomach as it was twisted (volvulus). Gastric dilation and volvulus, or GDV, is a surgical emergency and so Barley was taken to surgery right away. The stomach was untwisted, allowing a tube to be passed and therefore relieving the pressure. Once this had been corrected a procedure called a belt-loop gastropexy was performed, attaching the stomach to the body wall to prevent it from twisting again. After surgery she recovered well. Thanks to the quick actions of her owners that night Barley is now back to her normal self, and we think she is a star! If you feel your animal is having an emergency we provide a 24 hour service using our own vets so please don’t feel stuck if they are unwell, even in the middle of the night!
