Starting October 27th and 28th, 1938, Polish Jews were expelled from Germany and sent back to Poland. Initially denied entry by the Polish government, thousands set up camp in the Zbasyn. This expulsion of the Polish Jews influenced Herschel Grynszpan to shoot German embassy official Ernst von Rat. Von Rats death became the catalyst for the November pogrom, Kristallnacht. Prominent Jewish leaders, like Emanuel Ringelblum, arrived in Zbasyn to provide aid: shelter, food/water, supplies.
