State to run 341 more ration offices Kolkata, 15 October: State government will run 341 ration offices from Block Development Offices (BDO) for distributing rice at subsidised rates for poor people. State Food and Supply minister Mr Jyotipriya Mullick said that three such ration shops will be opened in north Bengal tomorrow and more such shops will be set up shortly. He said those offices will be run in several areas of closed tea gardens, Junglemahal and other poverty stricken areas. He said three new offices will be opened at Dheklapara, Surindernagar and Red Bank tea gardens areas. Mr Jyotipriya Mullick will inaugurate those ration shops tomorrow. He also said the government will distribute free rice to a lakh poor families tomorrow to mark World Food Day. On the occasion of the World Food Day, the state government will distribute rice to around one lakh families below poverty line. Every district has made a list of around five thousand such families. Every such family will be supplied with a 2-kg packet of rice. Apart from rice, wheat, pulses and grams will also be handed to five thousand malnourished children and their mothers. The rice distribution will be continued for the next six months. A programme was held today at the Khadya Bhavan for this purpose. State Finance Minister, Mr Amit Mitra, Health Minister Ms Chandrima Bhattacharya and Women and Child Welfare Minister Dr Shashi Panja attended the programme. It may be recalled that the state had earlier distributed rice at Rs 2 per kg to three and half crore poor people of the state. sns
