Statement from the Local Government Association President The Local Government Association President, Mayor David O’Loughlin, will seek approval to take a six month leave of absence from the role as he contest the seat of Adelaide at the March 2014 State Elections. Mayor O’Loughlin was endorsed as the ALP candidate for the seat by Labor Party on Monday 1 October. “My recent endorsement as the ALP candidate for the seat of Adelaide may raise some concerns about whether an endorsed political candidate for the ALP will be able to fight for Local Government issues with the incumbent State Labor Government and to negotiate the best election promises from the Liberal Opposition and minor parties in the lead up to the State Election,” he said. “For this reason I sought the advice of the LGA Management Group and with their support I intend to seek the approval of the LGA Board, at its November meeting, for a leave of absence from 21 November until 15 April, 2014. “This timeframe will allow a suitable buffer before the Election and a four week period after the Election results have been determined. If I am unsuccessful in my candidacy for the seat of Adelaide, I intend to resume my role as President of the Local Government Association of SA.” Mayor O’Loughlin said with the permission and endorsement of the LGA Board, an Acting President will take over the role during his leave of absence. “In the interim, in the lead up to the 21 November Board Meeting, the LGA’s Immediate Past President, Mayor Kym McHugh and metropolitan Vice President, Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg, will, where required, stand in my stead to promote and advance the cause of the LGA,” he said. “I am honoured to have been selected to run for office in the State Parliament, which will provide an opportunity to further my representation of our beautiful city and the State of South Australia.”
