Okay, bike people, Id like some advice. Ed Snyder, Jonathan Hall, Eric Aldinger, John Lombard, Peter Mersereau? As briefly as I can do this: I got my commuter bike about 3 years ago. The rear shifter, which was Shimano Tiagra (rear D is 105), has failed every 4-6 months since I got it. The first time they replaced the cable. The second through fourth times the shop insisted it must be a fluke and replaced the shifter with an identical part (all under warranty and taking it increasingly seriously...I have no beef with Bike Gallery service people). The last time I wouldnt take another of those, so they replaced it with a brand new but somewhat vintage Ultegra flight deck. Thats what failed this time. Im done with this. I need reliability and Im willing to pay someone for it...but probably not Shimano or Bike Gallery (their service people are helpful and customer-oriented, but after failing to fix it five times Im not likely to give them another crack at it). So: recommendations? Sram? Campy? Go for MTB parts (X9 or something)? This is my commuter...I want to do ordinary maintenance and have that mean I can travel with confidence that I can go more than a few months on a freakin shifter. Challenge level: Im huge, and also Barbur provides a ton of road grit. Im not easy on parts.
