Statement issued by Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, Chairman of the Leadership Council, UNP As usual, the UPFA and its maniacal supporters have resorted to celebrating their narrow win, which they achieved with greatest of difficulties and the help of some most cruel and violent means after violating every possible election law, by launching merciless attacks against unarmed peaceful UNPers. The latest victim of this uncouth and uncivilized demeanor is Chief Ministerial candidate of the UNP, Harin Fernando. Harin Fernando who obtained a record 173,993 preferential votes was attacked when he visited his supporters in the Hali Ela electorate. What is evident in this macabre behavior is that there are some invisible and powerful hands who control such violence against a very popular political leader in the district. Such unruly and chilling celebrations are usually limited to tribal barbarians. There is no room for such inhuman vandalism in a democratic and civilized society. In that context we can clearly see the messy chaos this country of ours has fallen into. The UNP supporters were constantly harassed by UPFA thugs during this election campaign. It was even more bizarre that Chaminda Wijesiri, the UNP Mayor of Bandarawela was assaulted by these same thugs at the Bandarawela police station itself. Chaminda went to the police station to lodge a plaint regarding harassment and violence unleashed against the UNP supporters by the UPFA ruffians. Chaminda is still in hospital receiving medical attention after being at the wrong end of physical blows thrown against him by some Government Ministers and politicos. Soon after the election results were declared, a series of violent attacks was unleashed against the UNP and JVP supporters in the Moneragala district. Roy Kalinga, the candidate who was placed number six on the UNP list was unmercifully attacked by UPFA thugs in the wee hours of 22nd morning. And he is in hospital and the reports that reach Colombo regarding his condition are not very encouraging. Having received advance warning on his attack, Kalinga had been in hiding; yet the attackers had come in search of him and mauled him without any mercy. Even Kalinga’s motor vehicle has been damaged extensively. The police investigation that is being carried out regarding this attack is moving at a snail’s pace and one cannot be satisfied with it at all. Nimal Karunaratne, the UNP Pradesheeya Sabha member of Haldummulla, was knifed by a UPFA politico. Yet again, Chandana Prabhath the UNP’s PS member in the Eastern Province is still under care in hospital after being attacked by the UPFA politicians on Election Day. Many such supporters of the UNP as well the JVP have been subjected to this barbaric treatment at the hands of UPFA politicos and their henchmen, The total list of incidents and victims, we are sure, would be quite lengthy. It is sad to note that the response from the Police Department, the arm of the law, is disgustingly deficient to date. Although some Police bigwigs show some interest at a superficial level in maintaining law and order, the regional officers’ response to these calls for peace and order has been dismal, to say the least. Against such a disturbing background of violence, lawlessness and undiluted venom, we appeal to those who occupy higher tiers in the Police Department to take immediate action to arrest this situation before it turns into a vicious cycle of violence, disorder and chaos. The net result of all these undemocratic and violent incidents would eventually make this regime more and more unpopular. In the final analysis, the beneficiary of such behavior by the Governing coalition is the United National Party. Yet we do not want to reap such ignoble benefits. We are indeed a true democratic party dedicated to the freedom of the masses without which there cannot be any real advance in Sri Lankan society. 2014.09.23
