Statement of the problems – ZhanChun 站椿的毛病 Q1: Have you ever asked your Master why you have to stand up with a straight back by ‘connecting’ the ‘Hanging power’? How this vital ‘Internal skill NeiGong 內功’ can be achieved? (the very first teaching ZhongZheng 中正 in the 13 Essences 十三勢 or the XuanJin, the first Essence of the SPM sonnet) A1: The Daoist term of ‘Heavenly Pillar 天柱’ also meant that if the pillar were to collapse, the entire Heaven will fall down causing disastrous consequences. If the pillar of the human body were to crumble, all physiological & psychological problems will emerge. The structure that prop up your back is your spine and that is our ‘Heavenly Pillar’. The major problem in holding up the ‘upright posture’ comes from the ignorance of ‘Anatomy’ of human body. If the back were to be propped up by the ‘conscious’ back muscle of the M. Trapezius or other ‘External’ muscle groups, the stiffness created will greatly limit the ‘agility Huo 活’ of the trainers. This is why we are seeing so much ‘robotic’ movements! The problem remains that it is the ‘sub-conscious’ Internal muscle group of the ‘semi-spinalis erector 半圓脊椎筋肌羣’ one has to learn to control it before any ‘manipulation DaoYin 導引’ techniques can be applied. For example like ‘propping’ up the spinal structure instead of the back muscles. The two illustrations provide very clear directions of focusing. (not imagination, not meditation out of thin air!) Once the structure of the human pillar has been established, then the weights of the skull & brain can be transferred through ‘Hanging power XuanJin 懸勁’ onto top of the spine. Likewise, the weights of the hands & chest can be ‘suspended DiuJin 吊勁’ onto the spine before the upper body weight can be transferred downward onto the Pelvis, then further through the legs onto the floor level. Why? When the structure of the body can be propped up in a structural framework on its own, all the muscles can be relaxed, allowing blood and Qi energy to flow healthily… So holding up both hands are defeating the benefits of standing posture entirely.. to ‘shed’ the body weight onto the ground so the body can ‘relax’!!... to be continued… Dr. YK Leung PhD.
