(Stefanie) Another tourist attack in the Botanical Garden Two tourists were victims of another attack in the Botanical Garden. Lia van Zyl | 25 April 2014 10:50 NELSPRUIT – Two tourists from France were victims of yet another attack in the Lowveld Botanical Garden recently. The couple who was on their way to Swaziland, planned to stay in Nelspruit at a backpackers for one night before continuing with their journey. According to Dave Busschau, manager of Old Vic’s Travellers Inn, they booked in on Sunday morning and he recommended they visit the botanical garden as it is one of the best gardens to visit in the country. The attack happened at around 16:00 when an unknown suspect jumped out of the bushes with a panga. He ordered the couple to hand over all their belongings after which he fled the scene. Luckily no one was hurt, but they are now without any money, passports or credit cards. “No one helped them and the staff at the garden was not very helpful either,” said Busschau. Mr Avhatakali Mamatsharaga, curator of the garden, was informed of the incident, Apparently three to four security guards pursued the suspect. “There was a guard in that specific area and when he heard the screams he immediately started chasing after the suspect, but the latter managed to escape,” said Mamatsharaga. J&M Security responded very quickly to the scene. There has not been attack since October 2013 and according to Mamatsharaga they will do everything in their power to prevent incidents like this from happening again. “We will appoint more security guards,” he said. According to Kapt. Dawie Pretorius, the attack was reported to the SAPS but no one has been arrested yet. Lowvelder tried to contact the couple, but did not receive any feedback before deadline.
