Stem Goitre Scourge Now The goitre scourge ravaging Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State is a worrisome development that needs concerted efforts to bring it under control. Goitre, which is the swelling of the neck or larynx resulting from enlargement of the thyroid gland, has affected at least 50 residents of the area. They were diagnosed with the disease during a medical intervention programme organised by the state government. The exercise was conducted in Badagry between 9 and 12 of December, 2013. During this mission, it was observed that there were a high number of people with neck swellings among the residents who came to seek medical intervention. According to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, at the end of the mission, several patients were registered with this complaint and after the observation was brought to the notice of Governor Babatunde Fashola he directed that an intervention be planned for all documented cases. The timely intervention resulted in the approval of the goitre control programme which is in full swing. We expect that the exercise would be sustained and expanded to cover other areas that the disease has not yet been detected. There should be massive enlightenment programme also on things to do to prevent the disease. Already the state government says measures put in place to stem the root cause of this disease include health education of the community members, iodization of their salt, and other processes that public health professionals of the state may judge suitable. We believe that preventive measures will reduce the prevalence of the disease and save the victims and the state government the resources that would have been wasted in treating victims that come down with it.
