^^^^^^^^++++ Stephen Hawking ++++^^^^^^^^ Stephen William Hawking is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology. Among his significant scientific works have been a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set forth a cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.He discovered that, contrary to popular belief, some stuff can escape a black hole. That ‘stuff’ is now called Hawking radiation. He united quantum mechanics (the laws that govern tiny particles) with general relativity (the laws that govern very big things, like galaxies) into one “theory of everything”. He wrote A Brief History of Time, one of the best-selling science books ever. Hawking suffers from a rare, early-onset, slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or motor neurone disease, that has gradually paralysed him over the decades.He currently communicates by using a single cheek muscle attached to a speech-generating device. Hawking married twice and has three children.
