Stephen L. Szyszka writes and shares: Please take less than two minutes to watch this. (Thanks, Dickson Chen) There are differing views on the quality of our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, as a song. Much of the criticism stems from various public performances which appear to demonstrate that its unsingable or just not a good song. And, of course, there are pretty heinous public performances (most recently at last nights All Star Game!), in which self-indulgent performers mangle the melody (and sometimes the lyrics!) until the song is subordinated to superfluous (and often unsuccessful) vocal gymnastics. Heres a live version of 7000 attendees singing the Anthem at the Barbershop Harmony Societys International Convention in Vegas earlier this month. Amateurs. Unrehearsed. Proud people simply singing the SONG, a cappella, in stunning four-part harmony. I respectfully submit that its a pretty darned good song...when you hear it (or sing it) like this
