Stephen Twist La Milonga El Tren is something special when it comes to Argentine tango. Its Saturday evening and we arrive easily at Plaza de Legión - unmissable because it is the site of a former rail station. From the main concourse, follow the music and take the stairs to the first floor which spans the station. La Milonga El Tren circles above the main entrance way. It is run by Paul Versteeve, a Dutchman living in Seville. We arrive early (just after 1900 hrs) and stay until the end at 2200 hrs, giving us three hours of superb tango. The floor is tiled, but excellent for dancing, allowing effortless pivots. Pauls music comprises a mix of Golden Age tango and some more modern tango and non-tango music. The emphasis is on the informal, with seating in a perfect circle around the pista. Lighting encourages visual contact, ensuring that you can cabeceo, although invitation is permitted. Tangueros included both locals and tourists, couples and singles. Paul Versteeve ensures that every tanguera gets to dance. There is no charge for this event, but we made a modest donation to assist with running costs. The special aspect comes with the location - dancing in the atrium, with views down to the concourse, gives a wonderful sense of space and freedom in this particularly friendly and inclusive place.
