Steve Mitchell mentioned the icy road incident on my post on my timeline about the first time I met Hugo. so finally I get to tell my side of the story... LOL Many of you have heard Hugos version which, believe it or not, may have been slightly embellished. Hugo and Jeff braved the weather in late January, 2012, to come up to Minnesota and play a house concert at Jon Iannazzos house (which until he played the Tiki Barn, he deemed the best venue ever for a house concert.) and a gig at Down South. I had sent Hugo a text telling him what he definitely needed to do to the Tiki Girl like making sure he had -20F anti-freeze and windshield washer liquid; properly inflated tires; good battery; etc. Carol and I met Hugo and Jeff at the concert since they were driving straight in from a gig in Illinois. The concert was amazing and during a snow storm, there were about 60 people in Jons basement which was completely decked out as a Tiki Bar. There were people from Des Moines, Ia; Duluth, MN; Detroit Lakes, MN; that braved the storm to come to the show. And we had the still-famous window bar (it was only about 27 degrees so Jon had filled the window well with beer and all you had to do was open the window and grab a very cold one). Hugo and Jeff were following us back to our house after the concert and the interstate was terrible. Slushy snow turning to ice and the driving was bad. I was only going about 40 mph and pretty soon Carol said she didnt think Hugo was behind us. Id been watching and thought that theyd drifted back a little but were still there. After a few more miles it was evident that Hugo wasnt there so I slowed down to about 15 to 20 mph on the freeway (it was 1 am and we had the road pretty much to ourselves). A few minutes later I noticed car lights coming up on us and finally falling in behind us. Hugo had finally caught up. Now to tell on myself, both of our phones were in the trunk of the car so we never heard the alleged calls. When we finally got home, Hugo told us that he wasnt even sure he was following us, but was just following the slow car figuring hed call us if he went to the wrong place. Theyd been sprayed by a passing snow plow and Hugo had what mustve been almost straight water in his windshield wiper tank which made the windshield even worse than no wash at all. Also, the next day we checked his tires and they were 7 lbs under-inflated which makes driving in snow even more difficult. Plus he had Jeffs merch case which weighed about 100 lbs and what Hugo called the coffin in the trunk which didnt help the front wheel drive. The fact that Hugo kept the car on the road at all with those handicaps was pretty darn amazing. Ive been referred to as Mario Andretti, Dale Earnhart and others in the retelling of that story. I was driving slow by Minnesota standards, but I was too fast for Hugo that night.
