Steve signing in at 7:30 AM. Skies are fair to partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from 64° to 71° across the 4-county area, Burke Weather HQ at Valdese reporting 71°. Closest rain is occurring over northeastern Tennessee with the cold front about 100 to 150 miles behind that over western middle Tennessee. It looks like thunderstorms should begin to build to our west around 11:00 AM this morning and move into the I-40 corridor (Marion, Morganton, Lenoir) between 1 and 2 PM this afternoon. This would be about about six hours ahead of the front so once here, showers and thunderstorms could continue for several hours and some heavy rain is possible. Severe wind and hail is also possible especially over eastern Burke, southeastern Caldwell and Catawba Counties. One of the short range models shows a thin band of enhanced wind shear/atmospheric turning over the eastern parts of the area and this could be the spot where the storms really begin to organize and where hail growth ramps up. Well have to watch. A greater threat of severe storms exists just to our east from Statesville to Mooresville to Charlotte and eastward but we face a respectable threat ourselves so be on alert from 11 AM through the afternoon. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also possible. Once the front clears western North Carolina later this evening, we should see improving conditions, possibly a little fog later tonight and a sunny, less humid day Wednesday. Highs Wednesday should be in the low and mid 80s, with lows Thursday morning in the mid 50s along the I-40 corridor. Very comfortable weather through Thursday. By late Thursday clouds begin to move back in as the front begins to retreat northward. This could set the stage for a return to somewhat rainy weather this weekend with continuous off and on showers and maybe a few thunderstorms. Temperatures may start out below normal Friday but by early next week, expect them (and the humidity) to return to typical sticky July levels again.
