Steve signing in at 7:54 AM. Clear to partly cloudy and cold this - TopicsExpress

Steve signing in at 7:54 AM. Clear to partly cloudy and cold this morning across the Great Valley with temperatures ranging from 28° at Old Fort, Hankins, Brindletown and Table Rock to 29° at Marion, 32.6° at Burke Weather HQ in Valdese and 32° at Hickory. A band of high cirrus expanded northward into our area and it may have been this cloud cover that held temperatures up slightly to our south for many of the peach and strawberry farms in York County SC as well as southern Cleveland County. It appears that the majority of reporting stations in York County were hovering around 37° or 38° with an isolated report or two around the freezing mark. I have guarded optimism that last night worked out well for both the strawberry and peach crops. Otherwise, I prepared for this update expecting to breeze right through with fairly uneventful weather through next Wednesday. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case now. Today well see slightly warmer temperatures in the low 60s and mostly sunny skies. If anything, high cirrus will be visible for most of the day. Tonight will not be as cold as cloud cover increases after midnight, expect upper 30s. It looks like low pressure is going to develop Friday in the northern Gulf of Mexico, probably south of New Orleans. This low will organize during the day Friday and Friday night as it approaches and crosses the Big Bend region of Florida (Apalachicola and vicinity) and exits near the Florida/Georgia state line into the Atlantic Ocean Saturday. This low is expected to cut off from the main upper air flow so it is likely to make only slow progress during its journey across extreme northern Florida and into the open Atlantic. Communities in northern Florida, eastern and southeastern Georgia all the way up to the sandhills and central midlands of South Carolina are looking at a prolonged period of heavy rain, especially the coastal areas. Question is, how much of that rain makes it into our area? Right now, it is a pretty safe bet that well see clouds through Saturday that will hold afternoon temperatures down, probably in the 50s on Friday and maybe reaching the mid 60s Saturday as the cloud shield finally shifts eastward. What is more uncertain is whether the rain will make it this far north. Right now we may miss the rains but with an easterly flow off the ocean we could get periods of drizzle Friday night and Saturday morning. In other words, the weather this weekend is likely to start out cool and rather unpleasant for Easter weekend. The good news is that all this mess is likely to exit the area before Easter leaving us with a sunny and pleasant day, afternoon temperatures approaching 70F after a cool morning. Our next system approaches Monday night into Tuesday with a disturbance and frontal system bringing the chance of showers and maybe a few thundershowers but, right now, little if any threat for severe storms. Sunny and, actually, slightly warmer returns by mid-week.
