Steve signing in at 7:59 AM. Partly cloudy skies across the 4 county area this morning with temperatures in the mid 60s. A few light showers to our north in Avery and Watauga Counties are dying out and unlikely to affect us. With a frontal boundary in the area today, we should see more showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and continuing well into the overnight. There will be a lot of moisture to work with so some of these storms could produce very heavy rains, in addition to frequent lightning and gusty winds. Street flooding is possible and a few of the stronger storms could produce damaging downburst winds as well. While the sun is heating things up this morning into the early afternoon we should see mid to upper 80s with humidity. Thursday looks to be a repeat performance of today. Sunny to partly sunny in the AM, thunderstorms building in the afternoon with decent coverage just about everywhere, heavy rains and strong gusty winds possible. With the front north of us on Friday, we may see a bit less storm coverage in the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and early evening. Then another stronger cold front approaches Saturday into Sunday. It appears that the front should cross our area sometime Sunday morning but fronts seldom arrive on schedule in the Carolinas and I think the Bermuda High may offer some push-back, so Im looking at an afternoon or early evening passage at this point. We are likely to see more concentrated thunderstorm activity again Saturday evening and even moreso on Sunday. If the frontal passage doesnt occur until later in the day, Sunday may be our best day for more widespread severe storm coverage. Temperatures should reach the mid to upper 80s each day with plenty of humidity. Cooler weather arrives Monday behind the front that should move offshore. However, another cold-air damming situation tries to set up so we probably wont see a lot of sun and a few upslope showers are possible. Highs should drop to around 80°. Drier air arrives Tuesday into Wednesday of next week with highs in the upper 70s instead of the mid and upper 80s.
