Storekeeper held for selling free ration SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 29: Police Wednesday detained a storekeeper of the consumer affairs and distribution department in summer capital Srinagar after a people complained that the government employee forced them to pay money for the free ration meant for the flood victims. Locals said the storekeeper Abdul Rashid forced some 60 households to pay Rs 250 each for the 28 kg ration that he had procured from the CA&PD department to supply free of cost to the flood hit people in Pamposh Colony of Eidgah. “The storekeeper was supposed to supply 30 kg rice per household free of cost but he provided only 28 kg ration and charged Rs 250 from each household,” a local Bilal Ahmed said. He added that when the residents approached Assistant Director Supplies, he asked us to provide details about the storekeeper. Dissatisfied with the reply of the assistant director supplies, the local lodged a formal complaint in police station Noor Bagh against the accused after which he was detained for questioning. “Yes, we have detained the storekeeper and the inquiry is going on,” a police official said. Pertinently, residents of Lal Bazar had also accused a storekeeper of demanding money for them while the Director of the department had appealed people not to pay anything for the free ration.
