Stories are often limited as simply tales of amusement or outdated - TopicsExpress

Stories are often limited as simply tales of amusement or outdated means of instilling cultural mores, which is the consensus one finds these days. But recently I have begun to consider that maybe stories are far more relevant to us than we consciously realize. When we look at people, we fool ourselves into thinking we are being objective, that we merely judge them by their details and actions. I believe we really take those things and create a narrative for each other. We need to in order to prevent the madness of always having to reassess everything we know about them every time we interact with them. I know I do it. To me there is a beauty in this, something about us that truly differentiates what we are. We can hope for each other this way. We want happy endings for each other, usually. However, this is a darker part of this I must consider. Stories are so powerful that we cling to them despite logic to the contrary. Maybe this is why some people stick to those that many of us consider lost causes. In their story for that person there is always a happy ending around the corner. They will stop drinking next time. That was the last beating. That was the last lie. If you ever are unsure of what to do with someone, finish the story - write an ending. You might surprise yourself. We are all an anthology, and in the end regardless of what awaits us when we stop, the stories continue. We bury in the ground, but we preserve in the tales.
