Storify Review from Wendy Laros. I reviewed Team Peter Rabbit that included the Kainoa, Christy, and Faith. The title to their Storify is “Can We Control the Elephants in our Heads? Our intellect is like a rider fighting to control our emotions which are as unwieldy as an elephant.” In this Storify, I heard a response to the Shirky article, “Why I Just Asked my Students to Put Their Laptops Away.” It appears this team supports his argument. I I noticed they built upon a reference used in Shirkey’s article from Jonathan Haidt that examines happiness. He uses a metaphor of a rider (intellect) in need of controlling the elephant (emotion). Using this metaphor as a framework, the Peter Rabbit team did an excellent job building a story that was easy to read with connected ideas. I thought this team did an excellent job with adding video to support their ideas. I wondered if they embedded elephant videos as an exercise for the reader to practice staying focused while seeing a very distracting video or if it was just for fun to add to the interest of the story. I had to scroll the page to get the video off so I could read the content in the Storify. I really liked the rapper’s video. Nice touch. There were academic and nonacademic resources, tweets from other team members, tweets from these team members. I might have missed it, but didn’t see a direct tweet from Christy in their team. Excellent project. I was totally engaged. The elephant theme was catchy!
