Does God Care What We Wear? by Travis L Quertermous From The Reminder, July 10, 2011 As the days get hotter, the clothing, it seems, gets skimpier and skimpier. The fewer clothes one wears, the better. For women, especially, the popular fashions seem to be as short as possible, as tight as possible, and as revealing as possible. But Christians must not let the world dictate what we wear. Just because a style of clothing is trendy, cute, or “hot” does not make it necessarily pleasing in God’s sight. In 1 Timothy 2:9-10, the apostle Paul wrote “that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.” Here we learn our clothing is to be modest, appropriate to the occasion, and moderate. In other words, our choice of clothing should be decent and avoid extremes, being neither indecent nor gaudy. Furthermore, Paul taught that we must cultivate our inner beauty over our outer beauty. This is another lesson our society desperately needs to learn! No matter how many workouts we put in, diets we subject ourselves to, or beauticians we see, eventually nature will rob us of our physical attractiveness. But it cannot touch a godly character, the inner beauty that will last into eternity. Friends, God definitely cares what we wear. Let us cultivate a Christ-like character, and our fashion choices will take care of themselves.
