Storm V Golden Square @ Square - 22nd June 2013 17 and Under The girls came out strong on the lovely sunny Saturday morning at My Jet Oval against Golden Square. Confident passages of play allowed the Storm to push onwards and gain a lead of 4 points, Storm 12 to Golden Square 8. In the second quarter Golden Square fought back making our defenders work hard. Storm were under pressure and with some errors and a couple of hesitations Golden Square were able to get in front, 18 – 19. In the third quarter Storm increased the pressure over the ball and made it hard for Golden Square girls to get a break. Mia shot well wide on the ring but Storm were unable to regain their earlier lead, 24 – 27. The game got intense in the last quarter as both teams stepped up their physicality. Storm’s mid-court worked hard bringing the ball out of defence and to our goalers. Our girls gave it 100% for the full game and should be proud of their effort. Golden Square just too good on the day, final score Storm 36 – Golden Square 40. Heidi For Hair award goes to Georgia Lasslett and the Strath Fish ‘n’ Chips went to Jess Moloney. B reserve Both teams started off the mark with goals going wayward. Defenders were getting tips and Maddy was a great backup. Once settled Storm made great use of channels with Larissa driving well. Alicia worked hard by transitioning well and getting some turnovers resulting in goals. Sherene putting a lot of pressure on her WA and getting turnovers. A tough battle by both sides ending in 9 goals each at the end of the first quarter. Coming on in the second the pace of the game slowed. Izzy and Ed brilliant in defence making Golden Square attack to feed in to the ring. Sherene again working well in WD sticking like glue to her opponent. Golden Square made use of the new sub rule and replaced their C and GA. Storm having to adjust and work out their new player allowed Golden Square to edge forward and get a 4 goal lead, 16 – 20. Storm defence blocking Golden Square time after time with Rach getting many tips and Ed multiple intercepts. A few speedy passes and impatience meant Storm gave a few balls away, 18 – 30. Changes made by Storm saw Larissa come off and Maddy in at WA. Ed was firing on all cylinders with rebounds and intercepts a plenty. A short burst of energy and lovely passages of play after intercepts by Izzy. Cayla doing her bit by settling erratic play and directing her team mates with positive talk. Final score, Storm 24 – Golden Square 40. National Hotel awards went to Izzy and Brazilian Beauty award goes to Larissa. B grade Fast intense game, accuracy was the difference with Square being the first to settle. Defence was solid with the attack end trying to shake some nerves. Kaylee was tough in WD shutting down her opponent. A little crowding meant Square were able to get 2 breaks and take the lead, Storm 7 – Golden Square 9. Great start to the second quarter. Storm came back and grabbed a 3 goal lead. Great drives by Kim and Nic along with Rady and Kaylee bringing the ball out of defence well helped get the ball to our goalers. Ruby and Noni were working beautifully around the goal circle, 16 each at half time. Storm again coming out well at the start of the quarter. The team settled well with a new combination, Noni out to WA and Alicia in at GS. Jack and Rady put the pressure on Squares goalers and Ruby got her hands to many. Alicia having a great quarter in goals, 26 – 23. It looked very unlikely that Storm would let Golden Square back in with great driving by both the Alicia’s. A hard fought quarter by all but not enough to hang on to the 4 points, final score Storm 33 – Golden Square 35. Jackie Carrod takes home the Braidies Tavern award and Kaylee gets the Brazilian Beauty voucher. A reserve A big welcome to Nat as she debuted with the Storm against Golden Square at the weekend. With good talking in defence and lovely drives into the ring by Em Barnes Storm were on their way. Ez was offering and driving well creating opportunities for the attack end. The entire team worked hard on their pressure putting hands over the ball and getting a few turnovers. Scores at the end of the first quarter Storm 9 – Golden Square 13. The girls used their defensive skills well by placing pressure on Squares attack all the way down the court. Fantastic shooting and great moving in the ring by both Ems helped us get points on the board. Em Barnes showing she can really sink those long bombs. Nice rebounding by Taylah took opportunities away from square. Score 18 – 26. A quick turnover and goal by Storm to start the third quarter gave the girls a lift. Again the full court pressure and successful passes into the Goose were useful but not quite enough. Missed opportunities with rushed passes into Squares hands allowed them some easy goals despite Taylah getting many deflections, 26 – 41. Tireless pressure around Squares goal ring by Wal and Nat along with great vision into our own goal circle meant we were competitive and held possession. Although Storm had many memorable actions, Em getting a fluke goal as she was falling out of court and those long shots, as well as awesome deflections by Wal Storm couldn’t keep Square down as they shot goal after goal. Final score Storm 35 – Golden Square 53. Awards went to Ez – Nirvana Massage Therapies, Wal – Braidies Tavern and Em B – National Hotel. A grade A high scoring quarter in the fast paced A grade game last Saturday. Storm benefited from Langers great feeding into the ring. Kasey was moving well and was goaling accurately. Goose stepped up to A grade after playing in the earlier game and was going great guns. Scores at quarter time Storm 12 – Square 20. A better quarter for the Storm with Benny and Morgs were putting the pressure on Square and getting a few break. Mid-courters Jess, Dilz and Langers worked the ball through the channels down to our goalers well. Goose and Kasey were having another accurate quarter and Storm doubled their score. Square were tough and worked hard to equal Storms goals which kept them in the lead, 24 – 32. Morgs continued to put pressure on the ring and managed some rebounds but with a few turnovers not in Storms favour Square were able to cash in and increase their lead. Storms weakest quarter for the game, goalers were starting to fatigue and although they were moving well and creating opportunities only 5 goals added to the score, 29 -50. The girls kept their head up for the full quarter and gave it their all. Nic and Dilzy worked the ball down the court well. Final score Storm 37 – Golden Square 72. Awards Goose – Elders Insurance, Morgs – Braidies Tavern and Dilzy – National Hotel
