Story from abroad #5: Getting back from an amazing weekend in Grenada, I took a cab from the airport back to my student hostel. By the time we were stepping out of the cab with three of my friends I was so brain dead that when the driver asked for me to pay fare, I completely blanked on how much to pay versus how much my friends paid. I ended up overpaying by like 15 Euros! A strange expression came over the drivers face and he told me to leave because another couple just hopped in the car. As it dawned on me that I had probably just given him too much, I tried to ask him whether I had made a mistake but he repeated you already paid, you already paid. Maybe something was intentionally lost in translation. The new couple looked confused too. Closing the door, he took off and I blinked in confusion. My friends were waiting at the hostel door and were surprised I had taken so long to walk over. What was that about John? I scratched my head. I dont know. I thought I was paying for us? They grimaced. No, we paid our way. I nodded. Oh. crap. And thats how I got gipped out of money for the first time in a foreign country.
