Story of the Day: The Snows of Kilimanjaro by Ernest Hemingway. Harry, an American writer on safari in Africa, has developed an infection from a thorn and is awaiting death. He reflects on the life he has lived, and feels unfulfilled, having sacrificed his talent for an easy existence. As good as Hemingways best novels are, I believe that his finest writing is to be found in his short stories and it is in these that evidence of his genius is to be found. Reducing a story like The Snows of Kilimanjaro to a mere summary denies it the majesty of its wondrous symbolism and spirituality. But I dont think it is an exaggeration to rank it as one of the 20th centurys finest short stories, and essential reading for anyone with an interest in the form. I travelled around Kenya once, some years ago, and found it a thrilling experience. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, but some of the best views can be had from the Kenyan side, at the Amboseli National Park. The mountain itself can be illusive, as it is often veiled in cloud. But when the weather clears the views of the mountains snowy cap is genuinely breathtaking. xroads.virginia.edu/~drbr/heming.html
