Story: on the nite i shared this version of Last Mile with HEATWAVES Johnnie Wilder It became one of the more memorable moments in my life -and i have plenty- but after singing my lil version of it to him he ssys, Ok mate, lets put it down. For some reason hes extra relaxed tonite so i figured we were not gonna do our weekly 10hr pre production for another cut for his upcoming album on the Light Records Label. After laying down multiple tracks it was time to do a rough lead. Its 5am. Im alwayz in awe of his vocal and tone even after months of weekends just like this, so even tho im really tired im getting excited that hes abt to lay in a lead. The harmonies were simple but elegant and i scratched out as much bass as i could for this demo...it was sounding ok. As Majic Wilder was in the middle of the first verse i heard a creeking sound coming down the hallway and a rhaspy voice say, maaan, i cdnt stay sleep no longer with all those beautiful harmonies coming from in herrrre...I gotta get IN on some of THIS! I turned around to see who was in the hs with us cz its always just me, Wilder, his daughter Carla and Roz his wife. There rolling up next to ME was a face id seen many times on TV, mags, videos and album covers - Teddy Pendergrass!!! I cdnt talk for a second. I turned to look at Majic his head was back - Dyin laughing at the look on my face. He finally said, GOTCHA! Long story short, Teddy asked could he do a verse.....YOOOOU KIDDIN RIGHT? i suggested instead that he do the lift starting with I SHALL SEEEE.... WHEN he came in with his part my SKIN LITERALLY FELT LIKE IT WAS CRAWLING...seriously. when we finished it was 8am and Teddy said hed get label clearance and record this with Majic Wilder for the album - he never got a chance after he had his second van accident. He loved StraightCompany and we tried hard to get him into The Church in Philly where he lived on several occasions, Johnnie and I. Two of my favorite superstar vocalists in the same room singing with a joker like me. Imagine that. Only God.
