Story, words rhythm and rhyme when executed with purpose and reason can strip away the layers of differences, and bring us back to our humanity ~ Theresa Sao My friend Brian Rafiki Gashema is one such Spoken word artist that has a gift for stripping back the layers of difference. Here he is at TedX Youth in Auckland. Brian Gashema speaks about his experience as an immigrant to New Zealands shores. It was interesting to me how his story is similar to that of many pacific islanders who traverse across the ocean for a new start in a country so very different from our cultural roots that we call home. By the time I hit high school I had become accustomed to the culture but still perplexed by certain aspects, like growing up in Kenya youre told that for that eight hours that youre in school your teacher becomes youre mother and youre father so you must treat them with the same respect..ing here and finding out that what we call disciplining was translated as child abuse reminded me of that giant ocean between Kenya and New Zealand. SIT BACK AND ENJOY BRIANs TEDx TALK!!! youtu.be/ywoPdBw5YCg
