Stravinskys own (second and final) recording of his astonishingly beautiful ballet, Apollo, which you can hear the Santa Cruz Symphony perform on Jan 24th & 25th! Stravinsky described the Muses he chose to depict: I reduced their number (from nine) to three, selecting from among them Calliope, Polyhymnia, and Terpsichore as the most characteristic representatives of a choreographic art. Calliope, representing poetry and rhythm, receives the stylus and tablets from Apollo. Polyhymnia personifies mime with her finger on her lips. Terpsichore, with her lyre, represents dance by combining in herself both the rhythm of poetry and the eloquence of gesture, and thus reveals dance to the world. 1/3: youtu.be/ita-v5Sx2rg First tableau: Prologue: The birth of Apollo Second tableau: Variation of Apollo Pas daction (Apollo and the three Muses) Variation of Calliope (the Alexandrine) 2/3: youtu.be/8akyQnj6RSU Variation of Polyhymnia Variation of Terpsichore Second variation of Apollo Pas de deux Coda 3/3: youtu.be/l87nzxY-yrI Apotheosis Columbia Symphony Orchestra Igor Stravinsky, Conductor
