Stress Fractures: Weve seen a rash of running related stress fractures in our practice recently during the fall running season. So here goes...You might have a stress fracture IF: 1). If youve had pain in the shins (tibia), foot (metatarsals), lateral lower leg (fibula) thigh (femur) or Pelvis for several months that hasnt gotten better, hasnt gone away or is progressively getting worse during or after activity 2). If youve performed excessive weight bearing activities with little to no rest/recovery (running, jumping, sprinting, etc.) 3). Are a female runner/athlete (increased statistical likelihood) 4). Are a female athlete with menstrual and hormonal irregularities 5). Have dietary/nutritional deficiencies (calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and high quality protein) 6). Have past problems/past history with bone healing/remodeling/insufficiency (past stress fracture/fracture that didnt heal correctly, osteoporosis, osteopenia or systemic disease like cancer or autoimmune disease that affects bone) 7). Are on certain medications that impact bone density/bone healing...IF you have one or more of the following risk factors PLEASE get that evaluated by a trained professional (FACEBOOK DOCTORS and EXPERTS DONT COUNT) such as a sports chiropractor, sports medicine physician (medical doctor or osteopath), sports physical therapist, sports podiatrist or athletic trainer.
