Stress and the workplace I little while back in the Australian - TopicsExpress

Stress and the workplace I little while back in the Australian newspaper, the Herald Sun, there was an article about stress. According to the Lifeline’s annual poll the number of Australian’s who are experiencing stress have risen exponentially with 9 out of 10 Australians are reporting high levels of stress. Interestingly Australia had surpassed the US, where 75% of people are stressed. The number one stress is work, with worry about the future following close behind. People are also experiencing stress in their relationships and worrying about their health. In the last few years I have heard increasing complaints about the hostile and unsupportive environments people have had to deal with in their working life. Some of the most common problems are lack of communication, organization, support, understanding and care. Many employees feel undermined by their bosses and are stressed even showing up for work. They often feel spoken down to and put into situations where they have lack of control. The resources they are given are inadequate and people around them can seem intimidating, and competitive. There is lack of trust, insufficient instruction, under training, understaffing and work overload. Often when a job has been well done, there is very little acknowledgement and appreciation and a lot of pressure to perform. Many people feel that they are underpaid for the work that they do and lack confidence On a physical level stress can cause or contribute to high levels of anxiety, headaches, back aches, neck and shoulder pains, poor memory, fatigue, insomnia, skin disorders, depression, addictions and many other health conditions. What is really important is to begin to find new ways that people can start to communicate with each other and to implement programs for stress release and wellbeing. I know several businesses already do this, but the latest statistics show that there needs to be a strong increase in programs based on relaxation, healthy living and better communication. I also strongly believe that we need to bring more Soul, into the work place. To be healthy people need to feel appreciated, connected to others and at ease. The real work to relieve stress release needs to start at the root level by actually listening to the challenges people are dealing with, and addressing them in a creative, productive, effective manner.
