Strong knowledge of fundamentals is the key to GATE success: expert Aspirants told to brush up on basic and engineering mathematics The key to success in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), the premier entrance examination for admission into PG level programmes in the top institutes, is to improve one’s understanding of fundamentals, said The Gate Academy Director Nitin Rakesh Prasad. Addressing a seminar, organised by the Academy here on Sunday, he said, he or she has to go beyond the basic college textbooks to better their knowledge over the core engineering subjects. Giving a lucid PowerPoint presentation, the Director, made it clear that GATE aspirants, apart from developing good knowledge of core subjects have to also improve their understanding of basic mathematics and engineering mathematics. Drawing a sketch on various options after GATE, he said, the entrance examination is not limited only for ME, M.Tech or MS programmes in institutes such as the IITs, IISC’s or NITs. “Today GATE scores are preferred by over 17 public sector units and government organisation. Even quite a few core private companies set the standard of GATE score for recruitment. These apart one can try the MBA programme at NITIE-Mumbai or the four-year fellowship programme offered by the IIMs with the GATE score,” he said. Giving basic tips on how to prepare for the examination, he informed the aspirants that from 2014, all the examination will be online. For the coming year, the paper is being set by IIT- Kharagpur and examination window will be from February 1 to March 2. “Since they will be migrating to the new online format, IIT- Kharagpur will be offering practice sessions between January 25 and 29. Make it a point to visit the website of IIT-Kharagpur and take the online practice tests. This will acclimatise you to the new format,” he advised the students. Earlier, the Principal of KL University K. Rajasekhara Rao, addressing the students said that GATE aspirants should look beyond jobs in PSUs and focus on higher studies and research. Dean Academics of Acharya Nagarjuna University P. Siddaiah, in his address pointed out that GATE is a conceptual examination. “One cannot crack the examination by mugging a few topics. Concentrate on understanding the concepts. The in-depth knowledge on the subjects is important,” he said. The seminar was held at Maris Stella College and was attended by over 400 GATE aspirants.
