Structure: I remember back in the high school days when certain parents would not let their kids participate in sports, only to take time away from studies. Back then, I realized that made zero sense. Fast forward a few decades, and it is even more clear. The 2013 season has come to an end. Time to rest the body. Now that there is more time, less fatigue from 4 hour rides it seems like it would be easier to get "standard stuff" done. In reality, the early wake up call to ride, run, swim, yoga (or whatever your poison is) creates stimulus and form for the day. Racing and training is not critical for individual success. However, I do think regular exercise is essential. Those who have never exposed themselves to this are really missing out. If I had to quit racing, I would survive. If I was not able to use the tool of training to set my day, I would go AWOL. The brain really kicks in when the Speedplay cleat engages with the pedal. By the end of the dirt driveway, the day has begun. I hate to see what my grades would have been at Jesuit High School without XC and Track..............
