Student Program: Wing Fracture Wrapping Identifying a fractures location and severity helps CROWs medical staff to determine the style of bandage wrap to use. In wild birds, it is important to be the least restrictive while providing support and immobilizing the affected bone and muscles. Healing time is based on the fracture itself as well as how soon after initial injury CROWs medical staff begins treatment. Below is intern Dr. Jen Riley teaching the externs and fellows how to administer a Figure 8 bandage wrap on Osprey Patient 14-1829. Avian fractures heal rapidly, but bandage wraps remain in place to provide continued support until healing is complete. On average a Figure 8 bandage can remain on a patient for 3 days before physical therapy begins. Physical therapy continues for 3 weeks until the bandage can be removed and the patient can be transported from intensive care unit of the hospital to the extended care rehabilitation enclosures outside.
