Subject: Plentiful prizes including camera and wrist watch were given to 50 RECOs, who submitted excellent works to the KOICA RECO activity essay contest in Masimanimba area KOICA, the free aid agency of Republic Korea, said that they held the award-giving ceremony on the RECO activity essay contest in the five health areas (Mosango, Yasa-bonga, Masimanimba, Kikongo, Bagata)) at 11 a.m. (local time) of December 1st 2014. The purpose of this contest was the prevention of malaria in Masimanimba health area in Bandundu Province, which is one of the malaria prevention/control project areas of KOICA. The RECO activity essay contest, which was held from October 1st to 15th, was held under the theme of “Malaria can be prevented by our effort” together with 2,500 health volunteer workers and 250 elementary school teachers active in the KOICA malaria prevention/control project area. KOICA believes that it is important to prevent malaria in advance, secure early diagnosis if a person fell sick on malaria, and take the malaria patient with serious symptom to medical agency as early as possible; because permanent eradication of malaria is not possible yet. Therefore, KOICA thinks that the activity of RECOs is most important for the increase of knowledge and awareness on malaria held by the residents. Accordingly, KOICA held this contest to motivate the RECOs in each village and instill the interest of residents on the importance of malaria prevention/control by sharing and propagating the contest award result to other healthcare areas. In this first RECO activity essay contest in the malaria prevention/control project area, 314 RECOs out of 2,500 RECOs submitted their activity essays. The submitted essays first went through first evaluation in each health care area and the second/third evaluations were held at KOICA and the Graduate School of Public Health at Inje University. As the result, 50 essays were chosen as the excellent works. The Super Prize was given to NGUMBU working in Camp TP Village in Masimanimba area. KUMBI in Kikongo, KILERI in Mosango and KANGOMA in Mosango area were chosen as the Gold Prize winners. In addition, 46 more RECOs received commendation medal and plentiful prize such as camera, wrist watch and traditional cloth of Congo. The Super Prize winner NGUMBU expressed gladness for the prize and will for more hard effort in decreasing malaria in the future. NGUMBU also said that the award seems to be compensation on the past hard work in decreasing malaria in his village. The award-giving ceremony was more significant by including a drama performance on the malaria prevention performed by the students of NGEMBA Elementary School Lee Jeong-uk, the Representative of KOICA Congo Office, said that the essay contest was a significant event by sharing the live experience and thought of RECOs active on site, reminding the importance of RECO activity and motivating RECOs on malaria prevention activity. He added that he hopes the award-giving ceremony would become an important opportunity for the vitalization of RECO activity.
