Successful Deck Prep: We’ve seen several posts from people who have had an unsuccessful experience with deck coatings and we understand how frustrating that can be. You put in a lot of work. We want to remind everyone that proper prep is the key to success. In several of the photos posted on this page, you can see that there was another coating below the Rust-Oleum coating. It is imperative to remove any glossy or smooth finish before coating on top. That gloss makes it impossible for the new coating to grab on/adhere and it will eventually flake off. For those of you taking on a deck project this summer, remember that to best prep a deck, remove any previous coating including sealers (which may be invisible to you), lightly sand and clean. To test your deck to be sure it’s ready, simply drop a little water on the surface in several areas. If the water beads up, there is still some of a coating that should be removed. If the water sinks into the wood, you’re good to go and will have a beautiful and durable finish.
