Sue Bollinger-Crader posted this detailed video report on memories of Gaslight Square. This will bring back memories for many of us who experienced this entertainment hot spot of the fifties and sixties. While it does recall a number of clubs and casually mention entertainers who performed there, like Woody Allen, Barbra Striesand (at age 18), the and The Smothers Brothers, it concentrates on a few entertainers local to St Louis but fails to mention so many others like Billy Peak, Bonnie Bramlett, Dick Gregory, etc. etc. For a history of Gaslight Square there are a few books, one is Gaslight Square Illuminated and also a memoir by St Louis original Jay Landesman, the founder of Gaslight Square and its anchor club, The Crystal Palace. That book is entitled Rebel Without Applause and both can be found on ebay or Amazon. BTW, Bobby Sudberry, party person deluxe, who by virtue of his main career as a bartender knew just about every bar person who worked at Gaslight Square. Bobby took me there more than once and almost every drink was free except for our tips. One night alone I figured our tab would have been at least $125 or more, and that was in the early sixties. Sue knows what Im talking about.
