Sugar importers will face intense scrutiny in the coming months as the government moves in to rid the business of rogue traders. The traders are said to have taken advantage the political transition early this year to illegally ship in consignments that have left domestic millers with deep cash flow problems. The audit comes in the wake of revelations that Kenya had accumulated 24,979 tonnes of sugar stocks by August 13 — nearly three times the optimal level of 9,000 tonnes. The build-up in stocks is suspect because Kenya has to date used only 22 per cent of its 2013 official import quota from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) trading bloc.
