Suicide Concerns During the Holidays During the holiday season, some of our friends and family members may not find the holidays that joyful. Be vigilant of the signs and symptoms of depression which may include: • Sadness, with or without a cause • Lack of interest, energy, and/or motivation that is unusual for the person • Irritability and restlessness • Substance abuse behaviors that are beyond “having a good time” • Comments/jokes about suicide or self-harm If you or someone you know needs mental health help from depression or possibly suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. This is an important phone number. Keep it in your wallet. What happens when you call the phone number? You talk to another person. You are never put on “hold”. The call taker will ask a few questions, determine the nature of your concern and the best resource available, which is quite extensive. I called the National Suicide Prevention Hotline to gain firsthand knowledge of this resource. I can verify the quality and professionalism of the call takers. Use this resource if you have any concerns about the mental health of your friends and family. Happy Holidays. Be safe. Be well. This information is provided by the Command Surgeon Office, 84th Training Command as part of the Ready and Resilient Campaign.
